Florida’s Hometown Heroes Program Just Got Even Better! Here’s Everything You Need to Know

If you’ve been dreaming of owning a home in Florida but feel like down payments and closing costs are standing in your way, we’ve got great news. The Hometown Heroes Program has expanded for 2025, and it’s making homeownership much more accessible for first-time buyers in essential professions.

Whether you’re a teacher, nurse, firefighter, or serve your community in another frontline role, this program could help you buy your first home with less financial stress and more confidence.

Let’s walk through what it is, what’s new, and how to qualify.

What is the Hometown Heroes Program?

The Hometown Heroes Program was created to support full-time workers in critical roles who live and work in Florida. It helps first-time buyers by offering financial assistance to cover upfront homebuying costs.

Through this program, eligible buyers can receive up to $35,000 in assistance for their down payment and closing costs. These two expenses are often the biggest obstacles for new buyers.

This assistance is provided as a 0% interest second mortgage that does not require monthly payments. It is only repaid if the homeowner sells, refinances, or pays off the home.

What’s New in 2025?

The 2025 update makes the program even more accessible:

  • Higher income limits allow more people to qualify
  • More job titles are now eligible
  • You can still receive up to $35,000 or 5% of the total loan amount, whichever is less
  • It can be used with FHA, USDA, or conventional loans
  • The program is available throughout Florida

Who Qualifies?

To be eligible, you must:

  • Be a first-time homebuyer (meaning you have not owned a home in the past three years)
  • Work full-time in Florida in an eligible job
  • Plan to live in the home as your primary residence
  • Meet local income and loan limits for your county
  • Use the property for a primary residence (not investment or second homes)

Eligible professions include:

  • Police Officers
  • Firefighters
  • Teachers and school staff
  • Nurses, EMTs, and healthcare workers
  • Childcare professionals
  • Active-duty military, veterans, and surviving spouses
  • 911 operators, correctional officers, and many others
